Sunay Bhandare / Aqohra
is a Mumbai-based artist, Creative Director and founder of Aqohra. His practice spans brand identity, fashion, product, creative direction and visual culture.
Over the past decade, Sunay has been involved in the development of contemporary Indian pop and youth culture, working behind the scenes to shape, develop and introduce new ideas across fashion, music, lifestyle and design.
His practice has taken him across India’s contemporary cultural landscape, developing identities, products and creative worlds for brands, artists and cultural platforms including
Urban Monkey, Playboy, Gully Gang Records, DIVINE, Karan Aujla, Raftaar, Bamboy / Kaali Dunia, Afkap Panini, Taba Chake, Charan, Ithihas Studios, Drip Project and CHK.
Rooted in an artistic and cultural approach to design, Sunay’s work moves fluidly between art and design, often treating the two as interchangeable forms of visual expression. His practice is driven by an interest in how design can shape culture, identity and the way people see the world around them.
His early work with Urban Monkey coincided with the emergence of contemporary streetwear culture in India. As a b-boy and lifelong student of hip-hop culture, Sunay brought an insider’s perspective to the development of the brand, translating the culture into apparel, products and visual language while helping establish a distinctly Indian expression of streetwear.
A significant part of this practice has been his exploration of Devanagari within contemporary visual culture. Through his work across brands, products and collaborations, he has consistently experimented with the script as a contemporary design language — moving it beyond its conventional associations and into fashion, streetwear and popular culture.
He continued this cultural and design-led approach through his work with Gully Gang, its artists and collaborators, and later with CHK, where he currently serves as Creative Director, leading the brand’s creative direction across identity, product, communication and its wider visual ecosystem.
Alongside his commercial practice, Sunay develops an independent body of work across art, objects, clothing and image-making, while building Aqohra as an evolving practice.
